No clothing will make you live forever at the age of 21.

Prices, wages, etc, displayed in this spoof ad are not specific to any one fashion brand. The industry has seen wages as low as $0.00/hour; this spoof ad is meant to display the poor working conditions of the fast fashion industry in a satirical manner.

According to a Cosmopolitan article, the California Department of Labor “looked into the labor practices of 77 independent factories in Southern California. Labor violations were found in 85 percent of cases and those companies were ordered to pay their workers $1.3 million in lost wages and damages. However, because the Labor Department can only penalize companies that directly employ workers, the retailers themselves, including Macy’s and Nordstrom, avoided any repercussions.”*

Pedro Montiel, a worker who talked to the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre was being paid $4.50 an hour to work in a Los Angeles basement. According to the Human Rights Resource Centre, the retailers tied to the companies with the most offences were Ross Dress for Less, Forever 21, and TJ Maxx.
